What has been your most effective practice on opening day with students?

  • On the first day this year I introduced students to the "swear words" not allowed in my classroom. These include words like Stupid, Dumb, Can't, and Sucks. It really helped to break the ice with a new class, because we all know the words they were thinking I was going to say. For the most part, my students don't say those words in my class, and I really believe that it just adds to the overall positive environment of the classroom.

Here's an idea I found on twitter with thanks to Keisha Williams
